Mike F

Group Lead

Mike grew up in the rugged Highlands of New Jersey and spent many days exploring with friends and family in this region of the Garden State. After graduating with a degree in history and environmental health, his insatiable thirst for adventure led him to the Appalachian Trail. Five months and 2,000-miles later, he discovered a renewed sense of fulfillment from being totally immersed in the outside world. Mike served as an environmental scientist for several years until he made a transition to public service as a ranger and naturalist with New York State Parks. There he continued to hone his skills as an outdoor educator in becoming a Leave No Trace master educator, American Canoe Association kayak instructor and Wilderness First Responder.

In 2016, Mike achieved a lifelong dream of becoming a 'Triple Crown' hiker when he completed a journey along the Continental Divide Trail from Canada to Mexico. He's also an avid skier, snowboarder, and a big fan of disc sports. It's his firm belief that being outdoors brings out the best in everyone, and he hopes to draw from his experience and passion for adventure as a field mentor with Traverse.
